HORSE THIEVES - LATEST LOCAL UPDATES
A40 ACCIDENT (11 JUNE 2008)
Various reports are circulating as to whether an attempted theft was the cause of horses escaping onto the road near Sturt Farm, Burford. This latest report is taken from the Witney Gazette;
"A woman who was driving a car when it collided with loose horse on the A40 has suffered serious head injuries. The accident took place on the A40 outside Sturt Farm, between Burford and the Asthall Barrow roundabout, shortly before midnight yesterday. Firefighters cut the woman driver free from the car and she was treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken to hospital with serious head injuries. Claire Gourlay, a spokesman for Oxford Police, said: "The woman is now in a serious but stable condition. Four horses got loose from a nearby field and one of them died in the accident."
A post from the owner to the Oxford Mail website confirms that theft was the motivation;
"The horse that was hit was mine. The field he is kept in had been broken into in the early hours, and he fled to the road along with another horse who was put down this morning. I sincerely hope the lady is ok, and would advise any horse owners locally to keep an eye out for thieves."
SPELSBURY THEFTS (MAY/JUNE 2008)
Having emailed club members about the Heathfield attempted theft (see below), a response came back from one member who has heard that 3 horse have actually been stolen from Spelsbury.
HEATHFIELD, nr BLETCHINGDON ATTEMPTED THEFT (JUNE 2008)
Attempted horse theft at Heathfield. The man asked for overnight livery availability and while the girl went to check with the owners the man tried to grab a horse from the field. They stopped him and he drove away. They have reported his number to the Police. The vehicle was a maroon 4X4.
CHARLBURY/CHIPPING NORTON ATTEMPTED THEFTS (MAY 2008)
It has been brought to our attention that horse thieves are operating in the Charlbury/Chipping Norton area. Two incidents have resulted in fencing being damaged in order to attempt to steal horses out at grass. Although, the thieves were not successful, in one case the horse was left severely traumatised and injured and the others escaped on to the road. These are not rumours, as one of the horses's involved belongs to a WORC member.
